ARENA RACE

before the barrel races on Thursday night at the rodeo!!

The Arena Race originally began in Texas, and was brought back to the Ponca Rodeo in 1972 by Max Carnell. The race has been ran in Ponca for over 39 years. And now, Local Hartington Cowboy, Grant Heimes has brought the race to the Cedar County Fair. Each team consists of 10 riders on horseback. They all must make a complete lap around the arena without cutting any barrels, make their handoff to the next rider between the 1st and 2nd barrels, cannot drop the baton, and the last rider must place the baton into the center barrel to win the race.
